My name is Luz Gamarra, and I am a bilingual (Spanish-speaking) therapist dedicated to supporting individuals—especially those within our Spanish-speaking communities—who are ready to heal, grow, and reclaim their sense of self-worth. For more than 20 years, my work in Utah has centered around empowering underrepresented communities, advocating for equitable access to education and mental health, and walking alongside individuals as they navigate life’s most meaningful transitions.

Before becoming a therapist, I earned a Master’s and Ph.D. in Law and Political Science in Peru and served as a prosecutor for over seven years. After immigrating to the United States, I pursued a Master’s in Social Work with a focus on International Social Work at the University of Utah—a journey that strengthened my commitment to trauma-informed care, community empowerment, and culturally grounded healing.
During my many years at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC), I became deeply involved in uplifting first-generation, immigrant, and multilingual students. I founded and pioneered some of SLCC’s most impactful mentoring programs, including:
-
SLCC Amigos Mentores
-
ESL Legacy Mentors
-
Leadership contributions to Generations of Latinos in Higher Education

Throughout my career at SLCC, I also collaborated with and supported numerous cultural, educational, and community-building initiatives that continue to shape student success today. My contributions have been recognized through awards such as the SLCC Outstanding Staff Award, Staff Star Award, NASPA Innovation Awards, TUMI USA Award, Peruvian Congress Award, and being named USA Today Woman of the Year (2022) and Faces of Salt Lake County (2024).
